Kali Linux is the best Linux distribution for penetration testing. It has almost every tool you need to test your system against hundreds of vulnerabilities.
Recently, I saw a few questions floating around the internet about Kali Linux not able to boot correctly. The system stuck on black screen on boot. I installed Kali Linux using graphical installer. After some tests and tinkering with the system I found out that this is drivers related issue. The default graphics drivers do not support my system hardware. I also noticed that the issue mostly occurs with the modern PCs.
I installed kali on my old PC and it booted without any problems. First of all, install the Kali Linux using graphical installer. After the installation has run successfully, reboot your computer, eject the USB drive and boot from the hard drive. On the grub menu, select Kali Linux and press [Tab] or [e] to edit the grub settings. Found the line? Now add the following parameter to this line. Give a space and type this —. Unfortunately, this step did not work for me.
If the above step did not work for you, no problem. It has brought you to a screen with a bunch of lines of commands it executed to try to start your system. From here, press F3. First of all, connect to the internet.
After updating, i restarted. When it came back up, it was a black screen with the kali loading cursor. I have tried:. Posted 05 July - AM. The desktop never shows up, it just remains a black screen with the loading cursor. I can manage to get on with ctrl, alt, f1 and startx, but whenver i leave it with ctrl alt f2-f6 it no longer works.
If i go back to f7 it is a black screen with the loading cursor. I followed the directions here and it fixed the issue- let me know if this helps. Posted 05 July - PM.
Don't get irritated as I don't know much about all this but thought I would ask a few questions. What do you mean by Updated, did the system ask for this update or did you update it manually for some reason? I'm sure you know not many are running Kali, it's a Security Penetrating Testing program for advanced users. I think only one, maybe two here are using it and probably not that often, so you might not get much help. The grub repair as suggested might also be helpful but unless you saw some kind of error I guess your out of luck for now.
Updated means just that the system was updated. It dont matter if the system asked for it or not.

My guest VM was Ubuntu 64 bits and it was configured as 32 bits version. To change:. For me, none of the above answers worked. I solved this problem by disabling 3d acceleration on the vm settings page.
This is quite odd since I've been using 3D acceleration flawlessly for months on that VM. It doesn't tell you what happened though. This happens to me today after upgrade VBox to 5. The logon screen looks normal. After login in, however, the screen becomes black and remain black, while VBox manager preview showing the desktop. And I guess I did it perfectly. Everything seems fine according to other Kali Linux installations. I've downloaded the 64bit 2. I get a short list of command that starts to appear, the last line is something that say something like this:. I'm sorry I don't remember the line correctly, this is just so you can understand. I'm writing this on Windows.
The thing is that after this line it's like it was on a low resolution then suddenly become in hd or the resolution changed. After a couple of seconds everything goes black, no cursor on the screen, no where to type anything, no login, just nothing! I can't run any terminal or nothing, please if you have a fix for this just help because I really need this system for my studies.
Could you give me a step by step fix because I'm very new at Kali Linux and I'm very excited to learn about it. And please don't tell me to install it on a VMware because I tried and it was very slow. I would prefer a Hard Drive Installation.
Now coming back to your question, yes its the display issue which affected Kali to load the login screen. There will be two solutions or workaround I can suggest you. If that doesn't work then I would say you have to reinstall it again. Let me know if you need help in finding the drivers for your display model.

Are you able to boot Ubuntu or none of the systems. If you are not sure and can boot Ubuntu, go to the site below and follow the instructions for downloading the boot repair script to Ubuntu and running it. Select the option to Create BooInfo Summary and post a link to the output here. If you cannot boot Ubuntu and have another machine to use, download the boot repair iso from the site and burn it as an image to a CD and boot it and use the same option.
So I rebooted got up to the bit where it asks for the username, I open the non-gui instance of Terminal and use. I've searched all over Google and tried dozens of solutions and nothing has worked. I have tried reinstalling, multiple times, I attempted to install Nvidia drivers but it just says unknown package using.
I have, however, run into the same issue on PC's using some nvidia graphics chips. The GT was one of them. The system would run through the install process with no problem. The GUI install would display normally. However, after the install, on the first startup, I would get the "back screen," with an unresponsive flashing underscore at the top left corner.
After experimenting with nvidia proprietary drivers, I decided to stick with the X. Org X server Nouveau display driver instead. Posted 11 October - PM. I would at least post the Version of Kali you tried to use along with the exact model of computer. I'll assume you followed the directions at THIS page? For Troubleshooting Installations. Al. I was attempting to do a dual boot but it just wasn't working so I just wiped my drive and did single boot. And yes I did. Posted 12 October - AM. Okay, so I eventually installed Nvidia driver Nvidia-legacyxx cause apparently my GPU is no longer supported or something.
Upon rebooting it caused the error "failed to start load kernel modules" so I had to uninstall it. To be honest, I don't know what to do anymore. Posted 12 October - PM.
